Project Management
IT
project management is the process of planning, organizing and assigning
responsibilities for achieving a company specified information technology objectives.
Overseeing
software development, hardware install, network upgrades, cloud computing, virtualization
rollouts, business analytics, data management initiatives and delivering IT
services are all examples of IT project management.
In
addition to the typical issues that can cause a project to fail advances in
technology during the projects execution infrastructure changes that impact
security and data management and unknown dependent relationships among
hardware, software, network infrastructure and data are all factors that can
negatively impact the success of an IT project.
The
first time first use penalty which represents the overall risk a company
assumes when using a new technology for the first time can also derail IT
projects. Because the technology has never been adopted or used in the organization
before there are bound to be issues that will jeopardize the projects success.
Managing the Project
The
project management life cycle is made up of five process categories that are
common to all projects. The phases of a project on the other hand are unique to
each one and represent the project life cycle.

Throughout the project these
ten knowledge domains will be controlled iteratively. A project manager will
generally face all ten of these knowledge areas in every project with the
exception of procurement. The areas should not be controlled in any particular
order rather the project manager switches to the appropriate knowledge and
processes dependent on the situation.
IT Project Life Cycle
The project life cycle is affected by various
distinct ways to manage an IT project. Organizations can choose from one of
these popular ways to assist limit the danger of costly rework hazards from
rapidly changing technology or extensive planning at the projects start. A
typical IT projects life cycle proceeds through iterations of planning,
executing and controlling until the project is closed and moved into
operations. However, there are three unique life cycles for IT project
management
Predictive life cycle
Iterative life cycle
